590 nm

Technique: Infrared photography (full spectrum)
590 nm is an ongoing research project on chromatic alteration using infrared photography techniques and its perceptual and symbolic effects on the image.
The photographs in this project were taken with a camera modified to capture the full light spectrum and a filter that discriminates wavelengths below 590 nm, which in practical terms means that only orange, red, and infrared light are used in the images.
This specific equipment was chosen in order to explore photography through the selective discarding of color ranges and the aesthetic and conceptual consequences that this entails.
Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, has the characteristic of being reflected mainly by the leaves of plants, which makes them appear in a different color, usually brighter than the rest of the elements. That is why vegetation is one of the components that is always present in the composition and the one that gives the project its greatest conceptual meaning.
This is a work in which, in addition to the reflection of infrared light, there is a double discarding. On the one hand, much of the color range is eliminated, as explained above, and on the other, the elements of the composition are reduced to a minimum: sky, vegetation, and another element that is usually artificial. This creates images of great clarity and compositional simplicity, in which the vegetation is highlighted by the intensity and brightness of its apparent color.
I find this interesting because, at first glance, the artificial element would usually be the main subject of the photographs, which would produce a possible symbolic and conceptual reading where the predominance of vegetation would lead us to biocentric interpretations.
It should be added that the final processing of the image includes the alteration of the white balance (false color technique), which produces a greater visual separation of the elements and tones that seek an aesthetic and environmental accompaniment to the elements present in each photograph.
